Hammana Social Center (Druze)

About

There is no khalwa in Hammana, the khalwa being, as we know, the place dedicated to worship in the Druze confession, a place characterized by its sobriety, even its stripping, far from any ornamentation or furniture. Men and women meet there separately to pray. They sit on the ground, usually covered with rugs, to meditate and meet God, getting rid from anything that can divert their attention away, the root ḫ, l, w itself evoking, according to the lexicographer Ibn Fâris, the idea of getting rid from something, or becoming empty, devoid, vacant.

However, in Hammana there is a Druze "social cell" (khaliyya), which is a social center whose headquarters were built a few years ago. It is a meeting place where the inhabitants of the region meet, at weddings or funeral ceremonies. Social and cultural conferences and poetry recitals are also held there, excluding political meetings. The Association of Druze Ladies of Hammana, which brings together the ladies of the Timani, Shaaban and Aawar / Khalil families, also holds in the
place social activities including "breakfasts", "snacks", etc., like associations of other religious communities.
